Vaccine Guide

Extreme treats Yellow Fever as mandatory, get it at least 10 days before Colombia and carry the physical card the entire trip. The list below covers required-adjacent, recommended, and consider-this vaccines, plus malaria prophylaxis and altitude planning. Always talk to your doctor or a travel clinic for personalized guidance.

Hard Gate

Treat Yellow Fever as non-negotiable. Card issued ≥10 days before Colombia. Plan the travel-clinic visit at least 8 weeks before departure.

Required / requirement-adjacent

Yellow Fever is treated as mandatory on this route. The certificate (ICVP "yellow card") must be issued at least 10 days before Colombia. Carry the physical card the entire trip.

VaccineNotesSource
Yellow Fever (treat as mandatory)CDC recommends YF for Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil, all four have active transmission zones (Amazon/jungle), and the region is in the middle of a serious 2025–26 outbreak. Entry rules are volatile: Ecuador imposed a hard requirement in May 2025 for travelers arriving from Colombia/Peru/Bolivia/Brazil, then lifted it in late August 2025, a rule that flipped twice in one season is likely to move again. Brazil mid-route adds no new requirement because the card is already needed before Brazil, and nothing entered after Brazil mandates proof of Brazil-origin vaccination. Honduras requires a YF certificate from travelers aged 1–59 arriving from risk countries (12+ hour transits included), not triggered here since you arrive from Switzerland, but watch any South American or Panama hub layovers.CDC: Yellow Fever
Polio (adult booster recommended)Global circulation plus a developing-country leg in Honduras. No hard requirement on this route, but get the adult booster.CDC: Polio for Travelers

Hepatitis AEssential, South American leg + Honduras, food/water exposure throughout.CDC: Hepatitis A
TyphoidRecommended across the South American leg and Honduras.CDC: Typhoid
Hepatitis BRecommended for the group given close-contact ministry and length of stay.Immunize.org
Rabies (pre-exposure)Consider for the South American leg (dog and Amazon bat exposure) and rural Honduras.CDC: Rabies
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE)Worth considering for the European outdoor legs, Poland, Moldova, and the Swiss Alps have TBE in forested/brushy areas during tick season (spring–autumn). Genuinely relevant given the trekking and rural refugee-ministry exposure on this route. Western Europe lowlands lower priority.CDC: TBE

Malaria prophylaxis + altitude

Not a vaccine, but plan for it. Each participant needs an individual clinic consult to pick a regimen, and altitude planning matters as much as malaria on this route.

VaccineNotesSource
Malaria, Amazon basinRisk in the Amazon basin portions of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. Map prophylaxis to whether the itinerary actually goes into lowland jungle vs. staying in the highlands/cities.CDC: Malaria Map
Malaria, HondurasRural Honduras, mostly P. vivax. No risk in major urban areas.Passport Health: Malaria
Low/no malaria riskAndes highlands, major cities, Chile, most of Argentina, and anywhere in Europe.,
Altitude (not a vaccine)This route runs through the high Andes (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru). Build in acclimatization and discuss acetazolamide with the clinic, for a trekking program, altitude is a more likely real-world problem than several of the vaccine-preventable diseases here.CDC: High-Altitude Travel

Important

This page is informational, not medical advice. Schedule a travel medicine clinic visit at least 8 weeks before departure to plan your individual vaccine and prophylaxis schedule. Yellow Fever is treated as a hard gate for departure clearance on this route.
